I called WhiskerDocs because my 5 month old Belgian Malinois ate some African Snails that had washed up on the beach after our floods here in Hawaii. I removed 3 from her mouth but had no idea how many she ate before I saw those. When we got home she was vomiting every 15 min (4 times in total). Of course it was a state holiday here in Hawaii and the vets were all closed except for the really expensive 24/7 ER vets. (Min. $275 to walk in the door). I spoke to a certified vet tech at WhiskerDoc's who happened to be in Florida where they too have the African snails, so she knew exactly what I was talking about. She had me check her gums (pink or gray), her breathing, tenderness or rigid abdomen, etc. Everything they would have done at the ER Vet office. She advised to not give her any food for 12 hours but plenty of water and a little bit of yogurt. If she continued vomiting or showed any neurological symptons, she said to get her to the vet asap. She suspected that once they were all out of her stomach she would begin to get better. Although the African Snails are toxic, she's a larger dog and likely it was just enough to make her sick. Apparently they are very toxic to small breed dogs. My dog didn't vomit anymore and was fine by the next day. The tech put my mind at ease and saved us hundreds of dollars for an unnecessary emergency vet visit. Can't say enough good things about this service. Hope to not have to use them again but like any puppy she puts everything in her mouth. There will likely be more incidents. Thank you, WhiskerDocs.
