What Stanley Steemer does not tell you!
What Stanley Steemer does not tell you! When a carpet cleaning company relies heavily on an enzyme treatment after a poor extraction process, the dissolved or broken-down organic material doesn't vanish—it remains trapped inside the carpet backing and pad as chemical residue and organic byproducts. Enzymes do not vaporize or literally "eat" matter into nothingness. Instead, they act as catalysts to break complex, foul-smelling organic molecules (like proteins, lipids, and starches found in vomit or feces) into smaller, water-soluble fragments. If those fragments and the fluid carrying them are not thoroughly extracted by strong vacuum lift, the following occurs: Where the "Dissolved" Dirt and Solids Go • The Wick-Back Phenomenon: As the soaked carpet backing, padding, and subfloor slowly air-dry over 24 to 48 hours, the moisture moves upward to the surface. It carries the dissolved organic residues, broken-down dyes, and surfactant salts right back up to the tips of the carpet fibers. This creates a stiff, crunchy residue and can cause water rings or orange/yellow stains to reappear. • Padding and Subfloor Stagnation: Enzymes require moisture to stay active. However, when an excessive amount of fluid penetrates past the primary carpet backing into the porous polyurethane pad and wood subfloor, truck-mount vacuums cannot easily pull it back out. The solid particles that leaked deep into the backing stay trapped. Once the area finally dries, the inactive enzyme crystals and the unextracted organic matter sit permanently in the lower layers until re-hydrated. • The Lack of "Fresh" Scent: Many commercial cleaners use heavy fragrances to mask residual odors. If the room doesn't smell fresh, it is often because the active enzymes are working under high-humidity conditions to break down the material, which can temporarily intensify a sour, organic smell while drying. If a high volume of soiled fluid remains in the pad, the deep-seated odor will persist once the masking deodorizers fade. Truck Lift and Moisture Control Truck-mounted extractors are highly powerful, but their efficiency relies on airflow and technician technique. If a technician rushes the job, skips "dry strokes" (passing the wand over the carpet without spraying water to maximize extraction), or restricts the airflow at the wand head, the actual water lift dropped at the carpet level decreases significantly. Leaving the carpet overly soaked to "let the enzyme work" is a common shortcut that shifts the burden of drying onto your indoor air, leaving the backing vulnerable to structural stiffness and recurring spots. Stanley Steemer franchises know this, they just won't tell you. They tell you the technician who came to your home has been working there for many years, as if the customer is somehow wrong in complaining their carpet is too soaked. The managers there will schedule another cleaning visit without telling you that they intend to do the exact same thing all over again! If you do not have heavily soiled carpet, you might be happy with the visual results, but it doesn't mean your carpets are clean if they are letting them air dry for 24-48 hrs. They will refuse to give full or partial refunds. My advice for using Stanley Steemer? JUST DON'T!
