Consumer Awareness for Homeowners My Trane A/C stopped working properly, so I called Self Brothers Heating & Cooling for service. The technician diagnosed a failed capacitor, replaced it in a few minutes, and the system immediately started working again. I was charged: • $99 diagnostic fee • $225 capacitor replacement charge The next day I researched the exact capacitor installed (JARD 12783, 35+5 µF, 370/440 VAC) and found the same part widely available online for approximately $14–$17. That means a component selling for about $14 was billed at $225 — approximately 1,497% higher than the online retail price of the part. After I contacted the owner and questioned the pricing, the company refunded the entire $225 capacitor charge the following day, leaving only the $99 diagnostic fee. I'm sharing this so homeowners understand the importance of requesting itemized estimates, asking for part numbers, and understanding repair costs before authorizing work.
