Simply not usable
Paid for Starter specifically for screenplay breakdown. The import/parsing is not reliable enough for professional use. I subscribed to StudioBinder Starter specifically to break down an 80-page feature screenplay. Within the first couple of pages, I encountered enough problems that I stopped trusting the imported script. My screenplay was written in Final Draft 11. First, StudioBinder refused to import the .fdx file at all, claiming it was not in FDX or Fountain format. The file is a genuine Final Draft FDX file and opens normally in Final Draft. So I used StudioBinder's PDF import instead. That imported, but the parsing was unreliable. Problems I encountered almost immediately: - A legitimate scene heading was interpreted as a cast member, meaning StudioBinder did not recognize it as a new scene at all. - A normal ABBY character cue was recognized correctly, while ABBY (CONT'D) on the same page was not. - Dialogue/stylized screenplay text such as GET. OUT. was incorrectly interpreted as a cast member. - Because actual scene headings can be missed, the automatically generated scene count and scene boundaries cannot simply be trusted without manually auditing them against the original screenplay. - Manually tagged breakdown elements initially failed to appear in the Breakdown Summary, despite being visibly present and correctly categorized in the Breakdown editor. They eventually appeared later, creating additional uncertainty about whether reports were actually synchronized with the breakdown data. - The interface does not make that synchronization behavior particularly clear when you're trying to determine whether your data has actually been recorded. - Scene Notes are locked behind the Pro tier, even though they would be particularly useful while doing a detailed production breakdown. The most frustrating part is that this is exactly the kind of software where structural reliability matters. If I have to manually verify whether every scene heading, character cue and scene boundary survived the import correctly, the software is creating additional work instead of reducing it. I paid roughly €30 for the Starter subscription and discovered these issues almost immediately. I ultimately decided it would be safer and faster to print the screenplay and do the breakdown manually. The interface itself has some useful ideas, and when elements are correctly tagged the resulting Breakdown Summary is nicely presented. But that doesn't compensate for an importer that made fundamental screenplay-structure errors on my file. For a product aimed specifically at film production, mistaking a scene heading for a cast member and consequently failing to recognize the scene is not a minor cosmetic problem. I wanted a production breakdown tool. I ended up having to quality-control the breakdown tool.
