READ THIS CRITICAL TAXPAYER WARNING BEFORE YOU PAY FOR A SUBSCRIPTION
Before anyone thinks about paying for a prescription access fee, an institutional subscription, or a research download, they need to read this direct feedback to know exactly what kind of corporate system they are signing up for. The raw evidence and economic telemetry are already out there in the public domain for anyone to verify. This statement lays out the unvarnished factual data side-by-side so everyday citizens do not have to waste time researching the mechanics of this operation themselves. A forensic audit of the academic publishing money trial reveals a highly curated, double-dipping commercial loop that places a severe financial burden directly onto the working majority and public institutions. The documented, public data parameters of this model expose three core systemic failures: 1. Indirect Public Funding Over-Reliance: Official economic records confirm that public academic and research institutions make up over 71% of SAGE’s global customer base. While the organization claims complete independence from state budgets, the vast majority of its estimated $400M+ annual revenue is derived from mandatory "Big Deal" subscription bundles paid for by government-funded university libraries. In Australia alone, taxpayers funnel over $332 million annually into these journal subscriptions. This represents a hidden pipeline of public tax dollars running a private commercial apparatus. 2. The Zero-Cost Manufacturing Racket: The business model effectively eliminates standard manufacturing labor costs by sourcing its raw materials (scholarly research articles) and its quality control mechanisms (peer-reviewed scientific audits) entirely for free from academics whose salaries are already funded by public research grants. 3. Double-Dipping Consumer Paywalls: After absorbing public funds to generate the research, the organization locks human knowledge behind a high-dollar paywall, charging independent professionals and everyday citizens a restrictive fee of $45 to $65 AUD per single article just for 24-hour reading access. Conclusion: This is not genuine independence; it is a closed, rigged corporate loop where the working majority faces 100% of the financial risk and provides 100% of the manual labor, only to be forced to buy back their own property at an exorbitant premium. The general public deserves transparency regarding how their tax dollars are systematically funnelled into private corporate trusts to manage the flow of public knowledge.
