Represent Studio: four weeks, eight hours, and a fixed price they could have emailed on day one
This started as unsolicited cold outreach. Represent Studio emailed us repeatedly until we responded. Before agreeing to anything, we asked three separate times, in writing, for their pricing, and said plainly that we did not want to waste their time if the budget was not a fit. Each time we were told pricing required a call. The call landed four weeks out. Between the email exchanges, the coordination, the preparation, the call and the follow-up, it cost roughly four hours each across two of us — eight hours of company time that should have gone into building, hiring, or selling. Credit where it is due: the person on the call had researched our company, listened carefully, and gave genuinely useful guidance on what format of video would serve our goal. Then the pricing, delivered at the very end: $12,000 for graphics-only, $15,000 with talent. We asked whether there was any room to move. There was none. No discount, no alternative scope, and no deferral — we asked whether payment could be structured around our funding timeline, the way startup law firms routinely do for early-stage companies, and the answer was no. The only concession available was splitting the same total in half: 50% up front, 50% three weeks later before final delivery. That is a payment schedule, not flexibility. Which means the number was fixed four weeks earlier, fixed when we asked the first time, and fixed when we asked the third time. It could have been a single line in the first email. We said exactly that — calmly, as feedback — explaining that at our stage every hour is committed, and that a number up front would have let us walk into the call ready to decide rather than ready to be surprised. My co-founder was mid-sentence when he was cut off and told they would not be working with us. The call ended there. Here is what I would want another buyer to take from this. A prospective client raising a concern about your process is the easiest possible version of criticism to receive — no money has changed hands, no deadline is at risk, nothing is on fire. If the person representing a studio cannot absorb that without interrupting you and walking away, ask yourself honestly what happens six weeks into a project, after your deposit has cleared, when you have no leverage left and you need to say the work is not right. The sales process is the most polished version of a vendor you will ever see. This was that version. Draw your own conclusions about the rest. My advice: if their cold email lands in your inbox, mark it as spam and move on. You will save yourself a month and a workday. The creative work may well be excellent. The way clients are treated was not.
